Gua Tempurung Cave Tours: Which Tour to Choose

Gua Tempurung is one of the largest limestone caves in Peninsular Malaysia, cutting through a hill near Gopeng about 24km south of Ipoh. The cave runs for several kilometres, of which close to 2km is open to visitors, through a series of vast chambers and along an underground river. Gua Tempurung cave tours range from an easy walk on raised platforms to a muddy, wet scramble through the river passage.

Gua Tempurung tours: which one to choose

Tours fall into two groups. Exact names, durations and prices change, so check the current options when you arrive or contact the visitor centre beforehand.

Dry tours

The dry tours follow concrete paths and steel stairs through the main chambers. The shortest takes well under an hour and suits families with young children. Longer dry tours climb higher through all the main domes, with many more steps, and need a reasonable level of fitness. You will stay clean, and ordinary walking shoes are fine.

Wet tours

The wet tours add a guided return through the underground river, wading and sometimes crawling through water in near darkness. They take several hours, need a minimum group size and depend on weather, since heavy rain raises the river. Expect to get soaked and muddy: wear quick-dry clothes and shoes that grip, and bring a full change of clothes and a towel.

If you are unsure, pick a long dry tour. It shows you the best formations without the commitment of the river section.

What you will see

The cave is known for its five great domes, high ceilings and flowstone formations, including a golden flowstone wall lit up near the walkway. The temperature inside is cooler than outside but very humid, and the paths can be slippery even on the dry routes.

How to get there

Gua Tempurung is near Gopeng, just off the North-South Expressway, around 30 minutes by car from Ipoh. Public transport does not reach the cave conveniently, so drive, take a Grab, or join a tour from Ipoh. The cave is also close to Gopeng’s white-water rafting operators on the Kampar River, and some visitors combine the two.

Best time to visit

Mornings on weekdays are quietest. For wet tours, avoid days after heavy rain, as tours may be cancelled for safety. Allow half a day including travel from Ipoh.

How it fits your trip

Gua Tempurung is an easy half-day trip from Ipoh, and it is roughly on the way if you are driving between KL and Ipoh. Combine it with Kellie’s Castle for a full day out. Our 10-day Malaysia itinerary includes Ipoh, and the Perak guide covers more caves and nature in the state.
