Strawberry Farms in Cameron Highlands: Where to Go
Strawberries are the highland crop every visitor wants to see, and a stop at a strawberry farm in Cameron Highlands is part of almost every first trip. The cool climate at around 1,500 metres lets growers raise berries year round, mostly in raised beds under plastic rain shelters. Most farms are small family businesses around Brinchang, with a covered growing area, a stall selling punnets and a café serving strawberry everything.
Do not expect the giant, sugary berries of a supermarket in Europe or Japan. Highland strawberries are often smaller and tarter, which is why the cafés turn so many of them into jam, milkshakes and waffles.
Where to find a strawberry farm in Cameron Highlands
The farms are concentrated in and around Brinchang town and the Kea Farm area just north of it, along the main road towards Kampung Raja. Two names come up again and again.
- Big Red Strawberry Farm, Brinchang: the best known, up a steep lane past Cactus Valley. It has a large covered growing area, a pick-your-own section when the plants are fruiting and a busy café.
- Raaju’s Hill Strawberry Farm: a long-running family farm that is a quieter alternative to Big Red, with pick-your-own when in season.
Many smaller farms and stalls along the main road sell punnets, jam and strawberry chocolate, and some combine strawberries with flowers, cactus or vegetable plots. Prices and pick-your-own rules vary by farm and season, so check at the counter before you start.
Picking your own strawberries
Where pick-your-own is offered, you usually pay for a basket and a weight allowance, then take scissors and snip berries at the stalk rather than pulling them. Look for fully red fruit, and leave white-shouldered berries on the plant. Picking depends on the plants being in fruit, so ask at the entrance whether there is anything to pick that day.
When to go
Mornings are best. Afternoon rain is common and the growing areas get crowded with day-trippers from about late morning on weekends and school holidays. The farms are an easy add-on to a morning at the BOH Tea Plantation and the Mossy Forest, as both are reached via Brinchang.
How it fits a trip
Allow 30 to 60 minutes per farm, longer if you are eating. Families with young children tend to enjoy the farms more than anything else in the highlands.
