Mossy Forest Cameron Highlands: Access and Tips

The Mossy Forest in Cameron Highlands is a patch of montane cloud forest near the summit of Gunung Brinchang, at about 2,000 metres. Here the trees are stunted and twisted, and every branch is wrapped in moss, ferns and lichen, kept damp by cloud that drifts through most days. It is managed by the Pahang Forestry Department as an eco-park (Taman Eko Rimba Mossy Forest), with boardwalks so visitors can see it without trampling the fragile ground.

Mossy Forest Cameron Highlands access in 2026

The eco-park closed on 7 January 2025 after a landslide blocked the road up, and reopened on 28 January 2025 once the clearing work was done. When we checked the Pahang Forestry Department’s announcements in October 2026, there was no newer closure notice for the Mossy Forest. Sections can still shut at short notice after heavy rain or for maintenance, so ask your guesthouse or tour operator on the day.

The official listing gives opening hours of 8am to 5pm daily. At the time of writing, fees for non-Malaysians are RM30 for adults and RM15 for children aged 3 to 12; Malaysian adults pay RM10.

What to see

The appeal is the atmosphere. On a misty morning the forest looks almost underwater: pitcher plants and small orchids in the undergrowth, beards of moss on every branch and views that appear and vanish as cloud blows through. The boardwalk sections are short, and most people spend about an hour walking slowly and taking photos.

Nearby, the Gunung Brinchang summit area has a telecommunications tower and a lookout. The road up is often described as the highest road in Peninsular Malaysia. Experienced hikers also use the area as the starting point for Gunung Irau, the highest peak in Cameron Highlands.

How to get there

The Mossy Forest is about 12km up the road from Brinchang, the same road that passes the BOH Tea Plantation at Sungei Palas. The upper section is narrow, broken in places and controlled by a checkpoint, so most visitors go with a licensed 4WD or a half-day tour from Tanah Rata or Brinchang. Tours usually combine the forest with the tea centre and include the drive up.

If you plan to self-drive, confirm locally that private cars are allowed past the checkpoint before you set off.

Best time to visit

Go early. Between 8am and 10am the cloud is at its most atmospheric, the boardwalk is quiet and you are more likely to finish before afternoon rain. Weekends and school holidays bring queues on the road up. Bring a warm layer, as it can feel cold and damp at this height.

How it fits a trip

Pair the Mossy Forest with BOH on one morning, then return to Brinchang for lunch. Our guide to things to do in Cameron Highlands covers where to stay, and the Pahang guide explains how the highlands link with Taman Negara and the coast. The highlands also feature in our Malaysia 10-day itinerary.

Tips for visiting Mossy Forest

  • Check access on the day with your accommodation or tour operator, as the road and boardwalks can close after heavy rain.
  • Arrive between 8am and 10am for the best mist and fewer people.
  • Wear shoes with grip and bring a warm, waterproof layer.
  • Stay on the boardwalk; the moss and soil are fragile and take years to recover.
  • Combine it with the BOH Tea Plantation on the same road for an easy half day.

Mossy Forest: frequently asked questions

Is the Mossy Forest in Cameron Highlands open?

The eco-park reopened on 28 January 2025 after a landslide closure, and we found no newer closure notice from the Pahang Forestry Department as of October 2026. It can close at short notice after heavy rain or for maintenance. Check with your accommodation or tour operator on the day.

How much is the Mossy Forest entrance fee?

The Pahang Forestry Department lists RM30 for non-Malaysian adults and RM15 for children aged 3 to 12. Malaysian adults pay RM10 and children RM5, and disabled visitors enter free. Tours usually quote the entry fee separately.

Can you drive your own car to the Mossy Forest?

The upper road is narrow and passes a checkpoint, and in recent years access has mainly been by licensed 4WD vehicles and tours. Rules can change, so confirm locally before driving up. A half-day tour from Tanah Rata is the easiest option.

How long do you need at the Mossy Forest?

About one hour on the boardwalks is enough for most people, plus travel time up and down the mountain. A half-day tour that also includes the BOH Tea Plantation takes around four hours.

What should I wear to the Mossy Forest?

Wear shoes with good grip, as boardwalks and paths are often wet and slippery. Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket, because temperatures near the summit are cool and cloud and drizzle are common.
