Melaka City Melaka About 45 minutes

Melaka River Cruise: Tickets, Route and Best Time

The Melaka River Cruise is the easiest way to see Melaka (Malacca) from a different angle. Covered boats run along the Melaka River through the middle of the city, past the red buildings of the colonial centre, old warehouses painted with murals, traditional Malay houses and newer riverside developments. The trip takes about 45 minutes and covers around 9 km, with a commentary along the way.

The cruise is run by the Melaka River and Coastal Development Corporation (PPSPM), the state agency that manages the river.

The Melaka River Cruise route

The main boarding points are the Taman Rempah (Spice Garden) jetty and the Quayside jetty near the colonial centre. Sights along the route include:

  • The Red Building and Stadthuys: the Dutch-era heart of the city, visible from the water near the start.
  • Jonker Street and the old Chinatown waterfront: backs of shophouses, cafes and bridges.
  • Murals: long stretches of riverside walls painted in bright colours.
  • The water wheel: a replica recalling the Melaka Sultanate era.
  • Church of St Francis Xavier and pre-war buildings.
  • Kampung Morten: a traditional Malay village of wooden stilt houses in the middle of the city.
  • Bastion Middelburg, Kampung Hulu Mosque and the Eye on Melaka Ferris wheel.
  • Mangrove stretch and, at night, the rhythmic water fountain.

Tickets and opening hours

Boats run daily from 9am to 11pm. Tickets can be bought at the jetty counters or online through the official ticketing site, with separate rates for Malaysians and international visitors and for adults and children. Check the latest prices on the official Melaka River Cruise website.

There is also a hop-on hop-off option, which lets you get off and rejoin at the jetties along the river, useful if you want to stop at Kampung Morten or a riverside cafe. A VIP and dinner cruise has been offered in the past, but check whether it is running before you plan around it.

Best time to go

Evening is the most popular time, and for good reason. After dark the riverside buildings, bridges and trees are lit up, the air is cooler, and the water fountain show only runs at night. Expect queues at the main jetties on Friday and Saturday nights and during school holidays. Late afternoon is a good compromise: you see the murals and buildings in daylight and come back as the lights come on.

Daytime cruises are quieter but hot, especially between noon and 3pm, though the boats are covered.

Getting there

The jetties are in the historic centre, a few minutes’ walk from Dutch Square and Jonker Street. From Melaka Sentral bus terminal, take a town bus into the centre or a Grab of around 15 to 20 minutes.

How it fits into your trip

The cruise is an easy end to a day exploring the old town on foot: A Famosa and the Stadthuys in the morning, Jonker Street in the afternoon, then the river after dinner. Our Melaka City guide covers where to stay, and Melaka is a stop on the Malaysia 10-day itinerary. See our Melaka state page for the wider region.
