Langkawi Cable Car (SkyCab): Tickets and Best Time to Go

The Langkawi cable car, officially the SkyCab, is the island’s best-known ride: a steep gondola line from Oriental Village at Burau Bay to the top of Gunung Machinchang, one of the oldest rock formations in Southeast Asia. The line is around 2.2 km long, the steepest section climbs at about 42 degrees, and the trip from base to summit takes roughly 15 minutes. It opened in 2002 and is run by Panorama Langkawi.

The reason to go is the view. On a clear morning you look over the forested Machinchang ridge, Burau Bay and the scatter of islands in the Andaman Sea, and the summit is also the only way to reach the Langkawi Sky Bridge.

Riding the Langkawi cable car

There are three stations. The Middle Station, at about 650 metres, has viewing platforms looking back over the valley and the main island, and you can hop off here on the way up or down. The Top Station sits at 708 metres, with a short climb of stairs to two viewing platforms. From the top, the rock towers, chasms and pinnacles of Machinchang spread out around you, and on very clear days you can make out the coast of southern Thailand.

The gondolas are small and enclosed, and the final stretch between the Middle and Top stations is steep enough to feel in your stomach. If you are nervous about heights, the standard gondolas with other passengers are less dramatic than the glass-bottomed ones.

Gondola types and tickets

Panorama Langkawi sells several options. The standard gondola is the cheapest, at around RM85 for international adults and RM65 for children at the time of writing, with lower MyKad rates for Malaysians. Express Lane tickets (around RM135 for international adults) let you skip the main queue, and there are also glass-bottom, 360-degree, VIP and private gondolas at higher prices. The Sky Bridge and the SkyGlide lift down to it are paid add-ons or part of combo packages.

Prices and bundles change several times a year, so compare options on the Panorama Langkawi website before booking. Online tickets come as a QR code that you scan at the entrance gate; premium gondola holders identify themselves at the SkyCab entrance.

Opening hours

The SkyCab normally runs daily from 9:30am to 6pm. The operation calendar also lists weekly maintenance, usually on a Wednesday from 12pm, and the cable car stops in lightning or strong wind. When the SkyCab is closed, so are the Sky Bridge, SkyGlide and the summit cafe.

Getting to Oriental Village

The base station is inside Oriental Village, a small complex of shops, cafes and family attractions near Pantai Kok on the west coast. It takes roughly 25 to 30 minutes by car from Pantai Cenang and around 40 minutes from Kuah. Grab and taxis are the usual options, and there is parking on site if you have a rental car.

Best time to go

Arrive before opening. Queues build quickly from mid-morning, especially at weekends and in Malaysian school holidays, and cloud often settles over the summit as the day heats up. The driest weather is from roughly December to March; between May and October, expect afternoon thunderstorms and plan for mornings only.

Late afternoon can also be good on settled days, with softer light over the islands, but you risk a closure if a storm rolls in.

How it fits into your trip

Budget two to three hours for the ride, both stations and the Sky Bridge, then spend the afternoon at Pantai Kok or Telaga Tujuh waterfall nearby. Our 4-day Langkawi itinerary puts the SkyCab on day one so you can reschedule if the weather turns. For the bigger picture, see the Langkawi destination guide and our page on Kedah.

Tips for visiting Langkawi Cable Car (SkyCab)

  • Join the queue before 9:30am; the clearest views and shortest waits are first thing.
  • Check the operation calendar for Wednesday maintenance closures before driving over.
  • Get off at the Middle Station on the way down rather than up, when the queue is shorter.
  • Buy Express Lane tickets on weekends and school holidays if your time is limited.
  • Keep your ticket QR code handy on your phone; it is scanned at the entrance gate.

Langkawi Cable Car (SkyCab): frequently asked questions

How much is the Langkawi cable car?

At the time of writing a standard SkyCab ticket costs around RM85 for international adults and RM65 for children, with cheaper rates for Malaysians. Express Lane and special gondolas cost more. The Sky Bridge and SkyGlide are extra unless included in a combo.

How long is the Langkawi cable car ride?

The ride from the base station to the Top Station takes about 15 minutes, with a stop at the Middle Station on the way. Allow 2 to 3 hours in total including the viewing platforms and the Sky Bridge, plus any queueing time.

What time does the Langkawi SkyCab open?

It normally runs daily from 9:30am to 6pm. Weekly maintenance, usually on a Wednesday afternoon, and bad weather can close it, so check the operation calendar on the Panorama Langkawi website before you go.

Is the Langkawi cable car scary?

It is steep, with sections climbing at around 42 degrees, so people with a strong fear of heights may find it uncomfortable. The gondolas are fully enclosed and the ride is short. Choose a standard gondola rather than a glass-bottom one if you are nervous.

Is the Langkawi cable car worth it?

On a clear day, yes. The views over Machinchang and the islands are among the best in Malaysia, and the summit gives access to the Sky Bridge. On a cloudy or stormy day it is far less rewarding, so time your visit for an early, clear morning.
