Pantai Cenang: Langkawi's Main Beach Guide

Pantai Cenang is Langkawi’s main beach and the centre of the island’s tourist life. Around 2 km of soft, pale sand runs along the south-west coast, facing west over the Andaman Sea towards Pulau Rebak, and behind it Jalan Pantai Cenang is lined with guesthouses, resorts, cafes, duty-free shops and beach bars. If it is your first trip to Langkawi, there is a good chance you will stay here or nearby.

It is not the quietest beach on the island, but it is the most convenient, with gentle water, long sunsets and everything within walking distance.

What to do on Pantai Cenang

Swim and laze. The sea is usually calm and shallow near the shore, especially in the dry months. Mornings are the quietest time, when the sand is cool and only a few joggers are about. Shade is limited, so many people rent loungers and umbrellas from the beachfront operators.

Watersports. Jet skis, parasailing and banana boats operate from the middle of the beach. Agree prices and duration in advance, check life jackets, and keep clear of the jet ski lanes when swimming.

Sunset. Pantai Cenang faces west, and the sun drops behind Pulau Rebak and the outer islands. From about 6pm the beach fills with people, and bars set out bean bags on the sand. Several put on fire shows after dark.

Island trips. Kiosks along the road and on the sand sell Langkawi island hopping tours, sunset cruises and mangrove trips, many with pick-up from Cenang hotels.

Underwater World Langkawi. The aquarium at the northern end of the strip is an easy rainy-day option for families.

Eating and drinking on Pantai Cenang

Food runs from beach shacks and Malay warung to seafood restaurants and international cafes. In the evening, look for grilled fish, prawns and squid sold by weight, nasi campur at local stalls and roti canai for breakfast. Because Langkawi is a duty-free island, beer and wine are cheaper than on the mainland, and the beach bars stay open late.

Getting to Pantai Cenang

Langkawi International Airport is only a few kilometres north of Cenang, so most hotels are a short Grab or taxi ride from arrivals, and you will see planes coming in low over the beach. From Kuah jetty, where ferries arrive from Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah, it is around 30 to 40 minutes by car. Grab is widely used on the island, and car and scooter rentals are easy to arrange along the main road.

Best time to visit

The best beach weather is from about December to March, when skies are clear and the sea is flat. April is hot. From May to October, the south-west monsoon brings more rain, choppier water and occasional jellyfish, although many days are still sunny in the morning. Weekends and school holidays are busiest; weekday mornings are calm in any season.

Where to stay and how it fits into a trip

Cenang suits first-timers, families and anyone without a car, with everything from budget guesthouses to beachfront resorts. Pantai Tengah, just to the south, is quieter and a little more upmarket while still walkable to Cenang’s restaurants. From here it is around 25 to 30 minutes to the Langkawi cable car and the Sky Bridge.

Our 4-day Langkawi itinerary uses Cenang as its base, and the beach also anchors the island leg of the Malaysia 10-day itinerary. For more areas and food, see our full Langkawi guide.
